What To Smear On A TaunTaun Burger

Condiment Continuum

Condiment: noun

If you check out the Wikipedia page for Condiments, there are a bunch of examples and pictures.

So what is a condiment? Is it anything you shake or smear on something else to add flavor?

The article lists salt and pepper, ketchup, mustard, relish, cranberry sauce, and on and on and on….

So, what about Fantasy or SciFi genre condiments? Will humans in the distant future still have french’s mustard, or tabasco?

Others have written about this, for example, Meredith Woerner over at io9 mentioned some of The Tastiest Food Moments in Science Fiction. She mentioned the great Dune condiment, the Spice Melange. Very good point.

The Laughing Vulcan over on bbc.co.uk has a fantastic list of Science Fiction foods. The article ends with the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster from Hitchhiker’s, loaded with condiments, “Sprinkle Zamphuor.”

Writers talk about the importance of engaging the reader’s senses. Providing a backdrop of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures fills the imaginary world with depth and substance.

Of course, like most condiments…a little goes a long way.

Enjoy!
